THE ORLANG PROJECT KIRRIEMUIR
The Orlang project is a development by Christine Kydd and Maureen Crosbie using the Living Voices model. Christine was a member of the team that developed the model
for working in care settings, to curate a conversation with people living with
dementia. The themes are partly based around the calendar year.
The approach, working with Kirrie Connections, Kirriemuir takes the calendar theme literally- exploring, discussing and celebrating the
month and the season at that time.
Working together with artist Maureen Crosbie, the two have
developed an approach combining the Living Voice model with an artistic response
involving a variety of media.
The project is funded by the RS MacDonald trust

JANUARY PROJECT
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp!
and surely I’ll be mine!
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
We twa hae run about the braes,
and pu’d the gowans fine;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary foot,
sin auld lang syne.
We twa hae paidl’d i' the burn,
frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
sin auld lang syne.
And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere!
and gie's a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll tak a right gude-willy waught,
for auld lang syne.
In Scotland we celebrate New Year in many different ways. Robert Burns' Auld Lang Syne seems to be one of the things that unite these differing rituals. That theme was explored by the group, using conversations responding to relative objects and discussions on the variety of Hogmany traditions within and beyond the experiences of the group members.
This culminated in making our own "cups of kindness" using Scottish themed scraps, tartan and music patterned tissue on cardboard cup and saucer structures.
For our visual inspiration we looked at the work of contemporary Scottish artists Callum Colvin and Ashley Cook.
